$41,000 to fight crime
The annual Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers telethon raised $40,712 over the weekend.
The agency's law-enforcement coordinator, Sgt. Dot Ardes, said the total was about $10,000 more than last year.
"Everyone worked hard and did a wonderful job," a happy Sgt. Ardes said Monday.
The Wayne Country Day School preschoolers' video, "Hard Knock Life," won the Crimey Award as the most-requested video.
The Crime Stoppers board's video, "Some Beach," and the Goldsboro Police Department's video, "Beer for My Horses," tied for second place.
"Although it was cold, at least it wasn't raining," said Sgt. Ardes, who was taking part in her first telethon as police coordinator. "It went real well."
Mount Olive Open House
Merchants will be the host of Mount Olive's second annual Holiday Open House on Thursday in downtown Mount Olive.
The events start at 7:30 a.m. with a "Business at Breakfast" meeting held by the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce at Mount Olive College and a noon fashion show at Oliver's Railroad Grille.
The stores downtown will remain open until 8 p.m.
Carolers and a storefront window-decorating contest will be some of the highlights. A contest will also be held to find the best catchy name for downtown Mount Olive. Door prizes will be given, including a bicycle and gift certificates to downtown stores.
A food drive will be held during the open house. Any non-perishable foods will be given to the Area Churches in Action Food Pantry.

Christmas play
StageStruck will perform Best Christmas Pageant Ever on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Paramount Theatre.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Wayne County Arts Council on Ash Street and Spence Avenue at the door.
