NAACP Veterans
program is Sunday
The Goldsboro-Wayne branch of the NAACP will hold its second annual Veterans Recognition Program on Sunday beginning at 5 p.m. at the Dillard-Goldsboro Alumni Cultural Center, 801 Poplar St.
The program is free and open to the public.
The featured speaker is the command chief master sergeant for the 916th Air Refueling Wing, Thomas E. Smith.
The News-Argus incorrectly reported the program would be on Saturday.
A quarter left to go
There are only two more weeks left in the 2004 campaign and United Way is still 24 percent short of its goal of $1,332,000.
So far, a total of $1,018,154 has been raised. That translates into improving the lives of 20,363 Wayne County residents, say United Way officials.
Donnie Barnes, campaign chairman, made the announcement at a report meeting Wednesday. "We have a lot to do in the next few weeks with over $313,846 needed to attain our goal of improving over 26,656 lives next year," he said.
He recognized the following businesses for completed employee campaigns: Mission Foods, $13,000; IMPulse, $814; General Electric, $16,920, a 17 percent increase; Wayne Memorial Hospital, $161,008, a 25 percent increase; Best and Langston, $7,515, a 13 percent increase; Park Designs, $12,409, a 5 percent increase; Shepherd Electric, $6,343, a 40 percent increase; Cooper-Bussman, $20,301, a 15 percent increase; Reuel, $2,317; and Progress Energy, $11,440.
The total raised this year will be announced at a campaign report luncheon Jan. 12.
Seeking toys
The Salvation Army has distributed all its stockings for its 2004 Christmas program but still needs new toys.
Any group or individual who wants to contribute toys worth $10 or more, appropriate for children ages 3-12, may bring them to the headquarters at 610 N. William St., weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Stagestruck tickets
Tickets for Stagestruck's production of "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" are on sale at the Arts Council of Wayne County.
They cost $10 each.
The show will be performed at the Paramount Theatre, Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 18 through 20, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 21, at 3 p.m.

International trade
A lecture on the politics of international trade will be presented Dec. 1 at Wayne Community College.
The lecture and discussion will be held from noon until 2 p.m., led by Dr. Tim McKeown, professor of political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Participants are encouraged to bring a lunch; the college will provide beverages and cookies. The lecture will be in Room 145 of the Dogwood Building.
