Holiday closings
Wayne County schools and government offices will be closed Thursday in honor of Veterans Day.
Public school teachers will have a workday.
The Wayne County landfill and county dump sites will also be closed.
Normal government and school operations will resume Friday.
Holiday bus schedule
The Goldsboro Wayne Transportation Authority will be closed on Nov. 25, Thanksgiving Day.
Passengers requesting van service for Friday, Nov. 26, must call and schedule transportation on Wednesday, Nov. 24, no later than 2:30 p.m.
Y lockers open
The Goldsboro Family YMCA has reopened its men's and women's general locker rooms.
The locker rooms opened Saturday after repairs due to a recent fire.
The fire, which started in the men's sauna on Oct. 14, was contained, but it affected several other areas of the Y.
The next locker room to open will be the women's fitness center.
The locker room in the men's fitness center will be last. That is where the fire started.
Veterans Recognition Program
The Goldsboro-Wayne branch of NAACP will hold its second annual Veterans Recognition Program, honoring veterans and military personnel on Saturday.
The event begins at 5 p.m. at the Dillard-Goldsboro Alumni Cultural Center, 801 Poplar St.
The program is free and open to the public.
The featured speaker will be the command chief master sergeant for the 916th Air Refueling Wing, Thomas E. Smith.
Several veterans and military organizations in Wayne County have received invitations.
Sgt. Smith has a large number of awards and decorations. Among his noteworthy awards are the George W. Bush Presidential Citation for work with the Knoxville, Tenn., role model program, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal for extensive contributions to youth, 22nd Air Force First Sergeant of the Year for 1996, Twelve Outstanding Airmen of the Year for Air Force Command 1996, Logistics Manager for the 1999 World Special Olympics, and International Who's Who of Professional Management 1999.
