Plot to rob store
foiled; 5 arrested
Five people were arrested Monday by Goldsboro police, foiling a plan to rob a store in the Pinewood Square shopping center on North Spence Avenue.
Police had been investigating an alleged first-degree burglary, armed robbery and kidnapping in the 3300 block of Central Heights Road. A-shift officers stopped a vehicle with a 16-year-old girl who had been reported missing, investigators said.
As officers conducted the missing-person investigation, they recovered a gun and a mask that had been described as being used in the holdup on Central Heights Road. After a further investigation, officers found that the detainees were planning a robbery in the shopping center.
Charged with felony conspiracy to commit armed robbery were Jamal Raynor, 18, of West Grantham Street; Devon Swain, 18, of West Chestnut Street; Samuel Rashadd Jones, 18, of East Washington Street, Fremont; Katrina Gail Spruill, 18, of U.S. 70 East, and Kilee Nacole Kendall, 16, of Myrna Road. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $20,000 secured bond.
All five also were charged earlier Monday with carrying concealed weapons. Bond for each was set at $500.
Six people injured
in county collisions
Six people were injured and damages were estimated at $72,700 in 11 recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A passenger was injured in a car-truck crash at 4:14 p.m. Monday on Wayne Memorial Drive near 11th Street, police said. Jadana Patrice Mitchell, 21, of Rockefeller Court was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. She was riding with Tanisha Renee Thomas, 22, of Remount Place. The other motorist, Hugo Magana Gonzalez, 44, of Town Creek, Ala., was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. Damages were put at $1,400.
*A driver was injured in a two-car wreck at 12:20 p.m. Monday at Wayne Memorial and Lockhaven drives, although no damage was reported, police said. Donald Lee Mewborn, 39, of East Walnut Street was released after emergency-room treatment. The following driver, Lyndsay Rae Newman, 18, of U.S. 70 East, LaGrange, was not charged.
*Damages were estimated at $5,800 in a two-car collision at 6:13 p.m. Thursday on Old Mount Olive Road near U.S. 117, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Bobbie Jean Sutton, 39, of Morgan Circle, Dudley, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other motorist was identified as Octavis Jerome McClarin, 22, of Timothy Street, Dudley.
*A driver was injured and the car that she was driving was demolished in a wreck at 8:45 p.m. Thursday on Pikeville-Princeton Road near Hinnant Road, the Highway Patrol said. Mary Lesley McGary, 41, of U.S. 70 West was released after emergency-room treatment. She was charged with reckless driving after the car ran off the left side and struck a power pole. The car was valued at $10,000. Damage to the pole was set at $800.
*Damages were estimated at $13,000 in a two-car crash at 2:15 p.m. at U.S. 117 and Country Club Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Jamesason Kyler Fields, 17, of Thunder Swamp Road, Mount Olive, was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. The eastbound car that Fields was driving collided with a northbound auto driven by Moises DeJesus Zapata, 25, of Magnolia.
*A pickup truck collided with a deer at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 117 near Smith Chapel Road, the Highway Patrol said. The truck sustained about $6,000 in damages. No charges were filed against the driver, Carl Odom, 51, of East Church Street, Calypso.
*A driver was injured in a two-vehicle collision at 8:08 a.m. Nov. 2 on U.S. 70 near Leslie Road, the Highway Patrol said. Tammy Lynn Moore, 29, of Toler Road, Princeton, was released after emergency-room treatment. The operator of tractor-trailer truck, Marvin Douglas Turnage, 35, of Cove City, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Turnage was changing lanes, the report said, and the big rig collided twice with Ms. Moore's auto that was in the right line. Damages were put at $3,000.
*Damages were estimated at $5,200 in a two-vehicle crash at 5:15 p.m. Nov. 2 on U.S. 117 near Ballance Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Brian Heath Pittman, 18, of Pender Street, Fremont, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorist was listed as Dora Virginia Lane, 63, of Prince Avenue.
*A driver was charged with a stop-sign violation after a one-vehicle wreck at 6:24 a.m. Nov. 2 at Old Grantham and Falling Creek Church roads, the Highway Patrol said. Randall Lloyd Thurston, 20, of Grantham School Road was not injured after his southbound pickup ran off the left side and struck trees. Damage was set at $5,000.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured and his car was demolished in a wreck at 5:26 a.m. Nov. 1 on Old Mount Olive Road, about a mile south of U.S. 117, the Highway Patrol said. Alton King, 28, of East Elm Street was released after emergency-room treatment. He also was charged with failure to maintain proper lane control after his car swerved off the right side and rolled over into a creek. The car was valued at $16,000.
*A driver was injured and damages were estimated at $7,300 in a two-vehicle crash at 9:23 a.m. Nov. 1 on U.S. 70 near Leslie Road, the Highway Patrol said. Carolyn Delores Glenn, 42, of Ryan Court was released after emergency-room treatment. The operator of a tractor-trailer truck, William Alexander Cobb, 60, of Norfolk, Va., was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash.
Drug charges
An 11th person was arrested Monday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad as a result of a recent two-month undercover drug roundup.
Lonnie Jo Charles Williams, 42, of A Street was charged with possession with intent to sell cocaine, sale and delivery of cocaine and conspiracy. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $30,000 secured bond.
Assault
A Goldsboro teen-ager was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon while inflicting serious injury.
Rhonda Marie Sutton, 17, of North William Street was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $5,000 secured bond. Ms. Sutton was accused of assaulting Mahogany Greenfield of 11th Street, police said.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A .25 caliber handgun and jewelry were stolen Monday from a home in the 1100 block of Miller's Chapel Road, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had damaged a door to get inside, the report said. The resident, M.S. Burlington, said the firearm was worth $150 and the jewelry, including an antique broach, a herringbone chain, a pearl necklace and a gold charm bracelet, were valued at $2,300. Damage was set at $150.
*A stereo system and a television were stolen Monday from a home in the 800 block of North Herman Street, Goldsboro police said. The resident, Tommy C. Saunders, put a $2,000 value on his property. No sign of forced entry was found.
*A black, two-door 1992 Nissan Sentra was stolen between Saturday and Monday from a repair shop at 2115 S. Slocumb St., police said. The owner, Bobby Lee Rawlings of Goldsboro, said he had left the key in the car which was valued at $500.
Missing
A 16-year-old boy has been reported missing by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Kevin Woodrow Sauls of 107 Butler Drive was described as white, 5-feet-10 and 150 pounds with short brown hair and green eyes.
Sauls was seen last at 9 p.m. Oct. 26. No clothing description was available. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
