Girl shot in Mt. Olive
MOUNT OLIVE -- At 10 p.m. Wednesday a man drove past a house on East Slocumb Street in Mount Olive and shot into it, hitting 13-year-old Iesha Kornegay in her left hip.
She was treated and released at Wayne Memorial Hospital. The gunman was last seen driving south on Connor Street in a burgundy 1987 Buick Park Avenue.
Mount Olive police officers responded and noticed the victim and several others standing on the porch screaming that Iesha Kornegay had been shot. They called for the emergency medical services and the on-call investigator.
Police don't have a possible motive at this time. Maj. Ralph Schroeder said this morning that the investigators are still following leads.
Drug charges
A 10th person was arrested Thursday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad after a two-month undercover investigation of street-level and mid-level drug dealers.
Kenneth Raiford, 41, of East Beech Street was charged with selling marijuana. He was released from custody on a $5,000 unsecured bond.
About 15 more people are being sought by drug officers, Goldsboro police and Wayne County sheriff's deputies.
Meanwhile, a Goldsboro teen-ager was arrested Thursday night by sheriff's deputies and charged with a felony drug offense on Arrington Bridge Road.
Spenser Calvert Johnson, 16, of East Pine Street was charged with possession with intent to sell marijuana. He was released to his parents' custody.
Car strikes pole
A car was demolished in a wreck at 10:05 p.m. Thursday in the Southco parking lot in the 2200 block of South John Street, Goldsboro police said.
Derrick Anthony Wooten, 18, of Sedgefield Drive, told police that his car may have hydroplaned on standing water, causing him to lose control. The car then slammed into a light pole. He was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The car was valued at $5,000. Damage to the pole was set at $600.
Fake check
A woman cashed a $400 sweepstakes check in a convenience store, and a bank told the shopkeeper that the check was fake, according to a Goldsboro police report.
Ahmed M. Al-Shaddadi reported that the woman had showed an identification number on the check. He said he had tried to contact the woman who lives in Goldsboro to get his money back. Al-Shaddadi operates H&A Quick Mart at 3515 Central Heights Road.
Dryer fire
MOUNT OLIVE -- Excess lint in a dryer caused a small fire Thursday that resulted in about $700 in damages to a shed in the 400 block of Hillsboro Street, officials said today.
The dryer and a shed wall were damaged. The fire had been put out by someone with a garden hose, officials said. Eleven Mount Olive firefighters answered the 11:08 a.m. call at the Lee Eure home and remained for about an hour.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A DVD player and snacks were stolen Thursday after a window was damaged at an apartment in the 1100 block of North Jefferson Avenue, Goldsboro police said. The resident, S.F. Croom, estimated the value of the stolen property at $52 and damage at $125.
*A Dell laptop computer was stolen between Wednesday and Thursday from a teacher's office at Wayne Community College, police said. The laptop was valued at $1,825.33.
*A red 1984 Honda four-wheeler was stolen between Sept. 6 and Thursday from a storage building in the 200 block of Coral Road, sheriff's deputies said. The owner and resident, E.C. Henson, put a $1,000 value on the four-wheeler. A fence behind the building had been pulled down, the report said.
Clarification
Quentin Bryce Barnes, who was charged with the armed robbery of the New Century Bank on Oct. 22, was on probation after being convicted of robbing the same bank in May. The 19-year-old man, who lives on George Street, pleaded guilty Oct. 5 to common-law robbery and was released from custody after serving 134 days in jail.
In addition, he was sentenced to 12 to 15 months in prison. The term was suspended on condition that he complete 24 months of supervised probation and 48 hours of community service and pay $2,240 that he stole and a $250 fine and court costs.
