Wings Over Wayne
begins at 9 Sunday
A full day of aircraft performances is on tap for this year's Wings Over Wayne at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
The event will be Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The base is expecting between 60,000 and 75,000 people to attend. It is free and open to the public.
The Thunderbirds, a precision flying team, will be making their only appearance in North Carolina this year at Wings Over Wayne. The pilots perform a combination of solo and formation flying routines. There will also be a variety of civilian aerial performances, military aerial acts, and military and civilian displays of planes.
The air show is the culmination of Military Appreciation Week, which began Monday and will run through Sunday.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Berkeley Mall. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash.
More shad help
Work is under way on removing another impediment to migratory fish on the Little River.
The Lowell Dam near Kenly is being removed, and Johnston County is being asked to turn the area into a park.
This makes the fourth dam in the Wayne County vicinity that has been removed in the last several years to make way for shad, striped bass and other fish that swim up the Neuse River and its tributaries to spawn.
Dams removed at Quaker Neck, Rains Mill and Cherry Hospital have already helped restore migratory fish into the upper reaches of the rivers. The Lowell Dam removal will bring the fish farther up the Little River.
