Council to buy former Super 10 site for parking

Goldsboro councilmen agreed Monday to pay $50,000 for downtown property that would provide more parking for citizens.
The Center Street property, belonging to J. Eustace Bizzell, was the site of the former Super 10 store. That store, at 134 N. Center St., burned down in 2000.
The city already owned the two lots adjacent to the Bizzell property. By purchasing this property the city can expand the John Street parking lot.
Wayne Appraisal Services valued the property at $50,000, and Bizzell agreed to sell his land to the city for the appraised value.
Motorcycle track
The council will allow Shelton's Harley-Davidson to build mini-storage units and a training track behind its store on U.S. 70 Bypass.
The training track, explained City Planning Director Randy Guthrie during the council briefing, would be a demonstration area in a section of the parking lot. It would allow customers to test motorcycles they were interested in buying.
On occasion, Guthrie said, the area would be set up to allow people to take motorcycle licensing tests.
The site for the storage and track will be between Shelton's former motorcycle shop on William Street, just before the entrance to U.S. Highway 117. The main store is now on U.S. 70 Bypass.
Shelton owns an L-shaped piece of property that stretches from the back of William Street store to his new location. The track and units will be at a junction of the property near Peacock Park.
Councilman Chuck Allen asked about the potential for a noise problem with the track.
Guthrie said there would be very little noise from the testing, and that it wouldn't operate at night.
City Manager Richard Slozak said that if noise became a problem, the Police Department could handle it through the noise ordinance.
Other business
In other actions Monday the council:
*Denied a request from Austin Scott to rezone the east side of Rosewood Road between Glenn Drive and Moss Hill Drive from R-16 residential to R-12 residential.
*Denied a request from Doug Herring to rezone the north side of N.C. 581 between Rosewood Road and Jumping Run Creek from R-16 residential to R-12 residential.
*Approved a request from Carlo Cook to rezone the north side of Royall Avenue between Wayne Memorial Drive and Jefferson Avenue from R-9 residential to neighborhood business.
