Chief Reid receives award

FREMONT -- Fremont Police Chief Ben Reid Jr. was shocked and surprised last week.
The veteran lawman received the annual Vocational Service Award from the Fremont Rotary Club.
"I'm really proud of it," said the 61-year-old Reid.
Reid's wife, Lois, and one of his two daughters also witnessed the ceremony during Thursday night's meeting.
The Rotary Club presents the award annually to a town resident who exhibits exceptional service and dedication.
Keith Stewart, the Fremont pharmacist and chairman of the club's awards committee, returned the compliment.
"We also thank him for the quality of his work, not only with the Police Department," Stewart said, "but also with the kids and his volunteer work."
Reid was appointed as chief in September 2003. Reid had worked as a part-time police officer since 1967 during his 30-year career at O'Berry Center in Goldsboro. He joined the department full time in 1992.
Reid was promoted to sergeant and then to captain and filled in as chief six times before he was appointed by the town board.
Reid also received the Fremont Jaycees award as the outstanding young law enforcement officer of the year in 1980.
