Fair Share finalist
Robin Grady, an employee of the Goldsboro News-Argus, is the fifth finalist in United Way's Fair Share Challenge.
The Fair Share Challenge is sponsored by Goldsboro Chrysler Dodge Jeep. To qualify for the six other weekly drawings to be eligible to win a brand new truck from Goldsboro Chrysler Dodge Jeep, a donor must contribute his fair share, which is one hour's pay per month or one percent of his annual salary to United Way of Wayne County.
Weekly drawings are held each Saturday through Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. at Goldsboro Jeep.
The final drawing will be held Nov. 20 when each of the 11 finalists pick a key in the order that they qualified. The finalist whose key starts the truck will win.
Finalists must provide proof of a valid driver's license and automobile insurance and must be present at the final drawing.
Sheriff's Dudley annex
The Dudley annex of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office will be located in the EMS station at 134 O'Berry Road in Dudley after Nov. 15.
County Manager Lee Smith made the announcement of change and has more information at 731-1435.
Thanks to military
City, county and business officials will gather next week to mark the beginning of "Military Appreciation Week," Nov. 1-7.
Goldsboro Mayor Al King and J.D. Evans, chairman of the Wayne County commissioners, will present city and county proclamations to military representatives at the ceremony, set for 11:30 a.m. Monday in front of the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce building, 308 N. William St.
Other councilmen, commissioners and chamber members are also expected to attend. The public is invited.
Giving more than 100 percent
A story Tuesday about early voting in Wayne County may have had some readers demanding a recount over some faulty percentages that added up to considerably more than 100 percent.
The errors in two statistics can be traced back to a number-jumbling reporter, not the Board of Elections, which provided the statistics.
The corrected percentages are these: The early voters have been 51 percent Democrat, 40 percent Republican, and 9 percent unaffiliated.
People ages 18 to 25 have been 7 percent of the early voters; ages 26-40, 14 percent; 41-65, 50 percent; and over 65, 29 percent.
He's not Jesse
Ben Rollins, Wayne County's incumbent candidate for the Soil and Water Conservation's district board of supervisors, mistakenly got somebody else's name in the Grantham political forum story that ran Tuesday.
He faces a challenger in November, Jesse Jernigan, who was not at the forum. At the end of the article, Rollins is called Jernigan, but Jernigan was not there. The story meant to say that Rollins has been on the Soil and Water board for 41 years, and he wants to serve another term.
Why is he smiling?
Goldsboro Friends Meeting will hold a book signing Saturday to celebrate the publication of "Deep Wells, Dry Springs and Crooked Creeks" by former pastor Willie Frye. It will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the fellowship room.
In his book, Frye tries to dispel the idea that Quakers are solemn and reserved. He demonstrates that they can also laugh.
"In fact," he says, "if the book doesn't make you laugh, you get your money back."
At the same time, Frye is quick to point out that the book also has an underlying devotional theme.
When asked about his book, Frye said, "Did you ever wonder why the man on the Quaker Oats box is smiling? I think I know."
Frye was pastor of Goldsboro Friends Meeting from 1959 to 1960 and returned in December 2003 for a six-month interim.
Feast in the East
The Feast in the East event at the Wayne County Fairgrounds is sponsored by several businesses and organizations in the area. Participants in the barbecue cook-off will begin cooking Friday night, and the judging and awards will be presented Saturday morning. Plates will then be sold for $6 each.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Goldsboro Milling Co. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash.
