Feast in the East set for this weekend

Wayne County residents and visitors will get a chance this week to pig out on the stuff that helped make the place famous -- pork barbecue.
It will be offered at a festival celebrating that most succulent of local products, right up there with Mount Olive pickles. Pickles are celebrated at a festival in the spring. The barbecue festival, called Feast in the East, will be held at the fairgrounds Friday and Saturday.
The festival will be sponsored by the Goldsboro Travel & Tourism office and the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, which is still looking for volunteers to take two-hour shifts in the information booth. Someone is needed between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday, and between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Saturday.
The event will center around the county's swine feast BBQ Cook-Off to be held by the Arts Council on Friday.
Other festival activities will include entertainment, music, children's activities, arts and crafts. Shirley Fong-Torres, the "Wok Wiz," will also be there. She will spend several days in Goldsboro filming a cooking show and giving demonstrations during the Feast in the East celebration. She is sponsored by an Oriental sauce.
Ms. Fong-Torres will cook with featuring local farm raised shrimp and other eastern North Carolina food products.
Monika Barkley will host the cooking show and appear on the main stage during the weekend. Mrs. Barkley has appeared on the Dr. Phil and Extreme Makeover television shows.
Other entertainment will include swing band, "Swing On," Elvis and Tim McGraw impersonators, gospel and bluegrass music by the Wells Family, Roby Huffman and the Bluegrass Cut-ups, and more. There will also be a Feast in the East Golf Tournament sponsored by the Goldsboro Exchange Club to be held at the Goldsboro Municipal Golf Course on Friday.
