'When Pigs Fly' nears completion

Two pink papier-mâché pigs decorated the table in the board room at the Arts Council of Wayne County's art center. They -- like several others -- had been made by local high school students under the supervision of their instructors and will decorate tables at the gala party scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 30.
Arts Council Executive Director Alice Strickland told board members that 90 people have registered so far to attend the event which will serve as the conclusion to the two-year "When Pigs Fly" public art and fund-raising project.
Tickets, which costs $60 per person, can be purchased at the art center. The party, which will feature food and music by a live jazz band, begins at 7 p.m.
The party was one of the topics discussed during the board's monthly meeting at the art center on Thursday.
*Other topics included the pig cook-off and barbecue lunch sale the Arts Council will have at the Feast in the East. On Friday, Oct. 29, the showmanship contest will be held. Judging of the barbecue will take place at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and lunches will begin to be sold at 11 a.m.
Board secretary Martha Bryan said that, among the donations being made to the project are about $700 to $800 worth of food from Wilber's Barbecue and five pigs from Ivey's Spring Creek Farm.
The Golden K Kiwanis have offered to help with the event.
Most of the teams competing in the cook-off are from this area, she said.
*Mrs. Strickland told the board that artist Robert Irwin will have an exhibit and book signing in the conference room on Sunday, Nov. 14. The signing is one of several he has scheduled, including at the North Carolina Museum of Art. "I am so pleased we have the opportunity to show his work," Mrs. Strickland said.
She added that track lighting will be hung in the conference room in time for the exhibit.
*The holiday art market will open Nov. 8.
*Additional pieces of sculpture for the garden were expected to arrive today.
*The audit has been completed, and nothing irregular was found, Mrs. Strickland said.
*The repair work on the fountain may be finished in time for the Oct. 30 gala party. The fountain will have seven lighted jets.
