Accident

An Indiana woman was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital Friday night because of injuries sustained in an accident on Highway 70 West.

According to police reports, Michele L. Chappelaw, 50, of Indiana, was attempting to cross over the east bound lanes of Highway 70 in her 2003 Toyota around 7:30 pm. Friday.

The report stated that she didn't see the 1993 Mazda, driven by Bo Travis Norman of Havelock, coming down the highway. The two cars collided, causing approximately $6,500 in damages to the Toyota and $4,500 to the Mazda.

Ms. Chappelow was cited for safe movement violation.

Man in wheelchair attacked

*A report by Bobby Lee Mitchell of aggravated assault on a handicapped person. According to the report, the 60-year-old man was riding his wheelchair in the 600 block of Eason Street Friday night when he was approached by a man he knew. The man was waving a hatchet and cursing at Mitchell, the report stated. Mitchell told police that the man struck him one time on the left side of his head causing a small cut.

Mitchell was seen by paramedics at the scene, but refused to be taken to the hospital. He has been handicapped since 2001 after suffering six strokes.

Investigations

Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:

*Monika J. Barkley of Pikeville reported that someone stole a personal check from her checkbook. The checkbook was in Ms. Barkley's desk drawer at work. According to thereport, an unknown person took the check, forged Ms. Barkley's signature and cashed the $500 check at a bank.

*Ester Cook of Bates Circle reported that someone took $200 from her purse at work. According to the report, Ms. Cooks purse was in a locked locker and there was no sign of forced entry.

Identify theft victim

A Wayne County man received a bill for damages caused in a July 31 automobile accident in Florida, but the man wasn't in Florida when the accident occurred.

According to the report by sheriff's deputies, Sarmjento Reynolds Jr., 26, of Dudley recently received a bill for the Florida accident.

Reynolds submitted copies of his paychecks to the company billing him to show them that he was in North Carolina at the time of the accident.
