A 24-year-old Dudley man was shot and killed Friday night in a residence on Hazelwood Drive.

Wayne County emergency personnel and deputies responded to the call around 8 p.m., and found Billy Joe Gregory in a mobile home with a gunshot wound.

Gregory was taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time after his arrival.

Officials from the Wayne County Sheriff's Office spoke with a witness who saw a white male running on foot from the residence immediately after the shots were fired.

A Sheriff's Office K-9 team responded to the scene, but were not successful in their attempts to track the suspect.

An autopsy has been conducted at the Chief Medical Examiners Office in Chapel Hill. The preliminary autopsy revealed that Gregory suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest.

A team of detectives has been assigned to the case and are following up on leads.

Sheriff Carey Win-ders is asking that anyone with infor-mation concerning the murder contact the Wayne County Sheriff's Office at 731-1481 or call CrimeStoppers at 735-2255.

"I'm sure there is some important information out there that our investigators could use," Winders said.

Detective Rick Farfour is the lead investigator on the case.
