One-stop voting starts Thursday in Wayne

The Wayne County Board of Elections has unanimously approved the staff for the one-stop polling places, set to open Thursday.
Meeting Tuesday evening, the Elections Board named senior supervisors and their assistants for the three polling places.
The board tweaked the lists to satisfy party concerns. Republicans had been upset that one polling place originally would have only two Republicans among seven staffers, while Democrats were concerned about Willie Ray Starling, a former candidate, being among the help.
Board Chairman Geoff Hulse expressed some aggravation with the parties nitpicking the lists. The board's main concern has been getting quality people and assuring they're trained, he said.
"We have done so much better than four years ago," Hulse said. "I really find this jockeying around not necessary."
Board member Chet Beverly agreed. "We looked at quality as the No. 1 factor. I don't see any heartburn in the setup we have now," he said.
But the board did agree to shift two people to quell complaints. The final list passed unanimously.
The senior supervisor will be Betty Jackson at the Wayne County Public Library, Patty “Sam” Smith Gray at Belfast Fire Station, and Gwyn Matthews at the Dudley Fire Station. All three women are Democrats, but each has at least one Republican as a supervisor in her polling place. The staffs are nearly split between the two parties.
Board member Joe Daughtery, a Republican, noted that Mrs. Gray is the daughter-in-law of Bud Gray, a Democratic candidate for the Wayne County Board of Commissioners, but added that he had “the utmost confidence” in her.
One-stop voting begins Thursday. The library, 1001 E. Ash St., will be open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m., while the Belfast station, 3212 U.S. 117 North, and Dudley station, 4533 U.S. 117 Alternative South, will be open Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
All three locations will also be open Saturday, Oct. 30, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. That will be the last day of one-stop voting.
Registered voters can go to any of the one-stop locations.

Constitutional Amendments
If it passes, Amendment 1 would give local governments the ability to issue self-financing bonds, an economic development tool.
Amendment 2 would allow the General Assembly to place the clear proceeds of civil penalties, civil forfeitures and civil fines collected by a state agency in a fund to be used exclusively for maintaining free public schools.
Amendment 3 would set the first term for magistrates at two years and all subsequent terms at four years.
