Hanan Idilbi, a native of Goldsboro, was recently awarded the Public Interest Service Scholarship at American University Washington College of Law. The Public Interest Public Service program awards full-time tuition, three-year scholarships on the basis of academic and personal accomplishments. Ms. Idilbi was given the award in recognition of her on-going work with human-rights, particularly concerning refugees. She is a graduate of Duke University and the daughter of Bashir and Adela Idilbi.

Kaitlin Thomas of Pikeville is a recipient of a $1,500 college scholarship awarded at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base by Scholarships for Military Children. She is the daughter of Mark and Janet Thomas. The scholarship will be applied toward her tuition at East Carolina University.

Sterling Tadlock of Goldsboro has been awarded a $1000 scholarship by the Educational Communica-tions Scholarship Found-ation. The award will be applied toward her tuition at Duke University.

Parrott Academy seniors, Virginia Knott, Christina Pate, Meghan Scott, are among 34,000 commended students throughout the nation that are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than one million students who entered the 2005 competition by taking the 2003 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test. Miss Knott is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Graham Knott Jr. of Kinston. Miss Pate is the daughter of Gayle Pate and George Pate of Goldsboro. Miss Scott is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Scott of Kinston.

Caitie Allen, 19, of Dudley, and sophomore at East Carolina University, was chosen to serve as an assistant for the leadership program offered by the Walter and Marie Williams Leadership Scholarship and the Harold H. Bate Citizenship Award. The 2003 graduate of Spring Creek High School will receive a $500 stipend to work with the leadership program team, planning projects and events throughout the year. She is the daughter of Tommy and Gloria Allen of Dudley. Miss Allen is majoring in business and marketing education.
