Fire destroys home
MOUNT OLIVE -- A man feel asleep Saturday night, his lighted cigarette ignited the couch, and the fire destroyed a double-wide mobile home at 1523 Indian Springs Road, a fire official said.
The resident, Ormond Whitted Jr., and his wife scrambled safely outside when they saw the fire.
"He fell asleep on the couch and woke up with his house on fire," Mount Olive Fire Capt. Greg Wiggins said today. "It was fortunate for him that he and his wife got out."
The home was valued at $60,000 and contents were valued at another $30,000.
Wiggins said the roof fell on the kitchen. The family might salvage some furniture and personal items, he said.
Eleven Mount Olive firefighters answered the 10:19 p.m. call with three trucks, and Indian Springs volunteers offered mutual aid. They needed more than three hours to put out the fire and hot spots, investigate the cause and finish salvage work.
In other fires:
*Unattended cooking was blamed Sunday for a fire that caused about $3,000 in damages to a mobile home at 142 S. Running Deer Circle, Arrington Fire Chief Randy Rogers said. The home was occupied by Chrisandra Holland and owned by Michael Odom. Eleven Arrington volunteers responded and needed about an hour and a half. Dudley assisted.
*An electrical short in a wall caused a fire Friday at a double-wide mobile home at 214 Blue Ridge Drive, Chief Rogers said. Damage was estimated at $500. Six Arrington firefighters were assisted by Dudley.
Man robbed
A Goldsboro man was robbed Saturday night of $120 and his keys by two men, according to a Goldsboro police report.
Bobby R. Williams, 65, told officers that he was reaching for his keys at about 7:50 p.m. as he stood on the porch of his Dail Street home. The suspects approached him from behind, and one displayed a handgun and demanded his money, the report said. The suspects were not described further.
Drivers clash
Two pickup trucks collided early Saturday in a convenience store parking lot on U.S. 70 West, the drivers had words and then one chased the other, according Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
Damages were estimated at $3,000 to each vehicle in the 1:15 a.m. collision. The drivers were identified as Casey V. Edwards, 32, of Randy's Drive, Princeton, and Bobby C. Sexton, 18, of Running Branch Circle.
The report said Sexton left the parking lot with Edwards following him. Edwards then ran into the back of Sexton's pickup later at O'Berry Center and Perkins Mill roads, deputies said. The pickup that Sexton was driving suffered another $3,000 in damages, the report said.
Six hurt in wrecks
Six people were injured in 12 recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 at 12:05 p.m. Sunday on North Berkeley Boulevard near New Hope Road, Goldsboro police said. Jonathon W. Nichols, 26, of Park Avenue, was charged with a yield violation. The other driver was Mattie H. Wheeless, 79, of Cashwell Drive.
*A driver told police that she had spilled a drink on herself and then took her eyes from the road and her car ran off the right side and struck a power pole, police said. Tracy Stancill Moore, 31, of Grifton, was charged with failure to reduce speed. Damages were estimated at $9,000 in the wreck at 5:39 p.m. Saturday on Cashwell Drive near North Berkeley Boulevard.
*A motorcyclist was injured in a wreck at 2 p.m. Saturday on Harrell Street near Dixie Trail, police said. Elijah Baker, 65, of Holly Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Barker was charged with failure to reduce speed after his bike ran off the right side and struck a mail box. Damages were set at $1,555.
*A passenger was injured and a pickup truck was demolished in a wreck at 12:45 p.m. Saturday on N.C. 55 near Old Harvey Sutton Road, the Highway Patrol said. Eva Castilla-Gonzales, 20, of Kinsey Mill Road, Mount Olive, was released after emergency-room treatment. The driver, Jose J. Caldera-Gonzales, 23, of Kinsey Mill Road, was charged with driving left of center after the pickup ran off the road, struck a ditch and overturned. The truck was valued at $6,000.
*Damages were estimated at $7,500 at 8:55 a.m. Saturday at Old Mount Olive and Genoa roads, the Highway Patrol said. Travis Tyler Creech, 20, of Antler Creek Drive, was charged with a stop-sign violation. His pickup collided with a northbound car driven by Deborah G. Myers, 50, of Wise Drive, Dudley.
*Three people were injured and damages were estimated at $11,500 at 5:55 p.m. Friday in the Pinewood Square parking lot on North Spence Avenue, police said. Clintoria Denise Bryant, 18, of Crawford Street, and her passengers, Mikeda Graham, 16, of East Elm Street and Chevoway Jackson, 16, of North Jefferson Avenue, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Bryant was charged with exceeding a safe speed. The other motorist, Raymond Earl Davis, 62, of Daisy Street, was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*Damages were estimated at $6,500 at 12:50 a.m. Friday at N.C. 111 and Spring Bank Road, the Highway Patrol said. Richard Walter Tyler, 71, of Potts Road, Dudley, was charged with a safe-movement violation. The report said Tyler's pickup collided with a car driven by Daniel Alvarado, 42, of Pineview Cemetery Road, Seven Springs.
*A driver was injured and damages were put at $9,000 at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at N.C. 111 and Daw Pate Road, the Highway Patrol said. Gloria R. Gay, 52, of Antioch Road, Pikeville, was released after emergency-room treatment. Antonio Jimenez, 32, of Crosswinds Drive, was charged with stop-sign and seat-belt violations.
*Damages were estimated at $8,800 in a three-vehicle crash at 3:55 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 117 near N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. Joy M. Faison, 26, of Dogwood Lane, Mount Olive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other motorists were listed as Daniel Gregory Derwitz, 17, of Lane Tree Drive and Thomas Bond Jr., 62, of Weldon Drive, Dudley.
*Damages were set at $23,900 in a four-vehicle wreck at 3:14 p.m. Wednesday on N.C. 111 near River Road, the Highway Patrol said. Alberto Ponce Castaneda, 16, of Ellis Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end wreck. The other drivers were listed as Terry Warren Featherston, 52, of North Marion Drive, Clinton Delane Cox, 16, of Darrel Road, LaGrange, and Renee R. Ward, 48, of Pioneer Trails, Seven Springs.
*Damage was estimated at $5,000 at 4:55 p.m. Wednesday on Lindell Road near Apple Tree Creek Road, the Highway Patrol said. Ledezma Hernandez Villanueva, 20, of Lindell Road, Eureka, was charged with driving while impaired and no operator's license. He drove back and forth in a yard until his van struck trees and became stuck.
*A driver was injured and damage was fixed at $5,000 at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday on U.S. 117 near N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. Joseph Lawrence Brown, 66, of N.C. 581 South was listed today in stable condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital. No charges were filed after the pickup ran off the left side into the median and struck several small trees.
Shots strike truck
A man was parked in his driveway on Bennett's Bridge Road where another man pulled up and fired four rounds into the resident's pickup truck, a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report said.
Roland J. Parker told deputies that he chased the car down U.S. 13 South to Grantham. The suspect left his car behind a warehouse and fled.
Damage was estimated at $200 to Parker's pickup. The suspect's 1998 Dodge Neon, valued at $1,500, was seized as evidence.
Deputies also are investigating these reports:
*A stove and tools were stolen from two homes under construction in the 200 block of Wingspread Drive. The thief had damaged two doors to get inside. The builder, David Harold Ellis of Goldsboro, put a $2,025 value on his property. The tools included a nail gun, a driver, a jig saw, a sander and two drills.
*A 2001 Kenworth tractor and an aluminum trailer were stolen from Goldsboro Milling Co. at 938 Miller's Chapel Road. The tractor-trailer truck, valued at $150,000, was returned after it had collided with a building and a locomotive. The thief said he was just joy-riding and then fled. Damages were put at $13,000.
Break-ins
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Four firearms and jewelry were stolen after a door glass was smashed in a home in the 2000 block of Salem Church Road. The resident, Bob Richter, said the long guns were worth $3,500.
*A white, four-door 2003 Mitsubishi Galant was stolen Saturday from an apartment parking lot in the 1600 block of Cuyler Best Road. The car, owned by Christopher Thomas of Andrews Air Force Base, Md., was valued at $15,000.
