Trick-or-treaters will make their rounds two days early if Wayne County officials have their way.
The Board of Commissioners is preparing to vote Tuesday to ask that all Halloween events be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29. The commissioners are also asking each of the county's municipalities to take similar action. The city of Goldsboro had previously set Oct. 29 as trick-or-treat day.
The county received several requests from both faith-based and civic organizations to move the observance, due to conflicts on both Saturday, Oct. 30, and Sunday, Oct. 31, County Manager Lee Smith said.
The commissioners also plan to award a contract for asbestos removal at the Jeffreys Building. Six companies bid for the work, which will precede renovation of the first floor.
Also Tuesday, the commissioners are scheduled to do the following:
*Establish a public hearing for Raymond Jones' request to rezone a 1.2-acre tract on Mt. Carmel Church Road from light industry use to airport zoning. Jones wants to build a house on the property.
*Approve updates to the county's Work First program.
*Proclaim the week of Nov. 7-14 as "Crime Stoppers Week in Wayne County."
The commissioners will convene at 8 a.m. Tuesday for a briefing on the agenda. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the commissioners' meeting room, third floor, Wayne County Courthouse Annex, 224 E. Walnut St.
