With eight weeks left in its 2004 campaign, United Way has reached 26.2 pecent of its $1,322,000 goal, or $348,620. Donnie Barnes, campaign chairman, made the announcement at a campaign cabinet meeting. He said that amount will improve 6,972 lives in Wayne County.

The campaign is ahead of where it was at this time last year when it had only raised 15 percent of its goal.

This year's Front Runners raised a total of $300,750, which was 22 percent of the goal, to help 6,515 people. The Front Runners total was announced at the Taste of Wayne, the official kickoff for the campaign.

Barnes said that several major campaigns are under way and initial reports are positive with many anticipating sufficient increases in pledges.

A midcampaign report will be held Wednesday at 8 a.m. at B&G Grill.

Barnes recognized the following businesses that have recently completed campaigns: Coca Cola Consolidated, $2,543 to improve 50 lives; First Citizens Bank, $2,814 to improve 56 lives; A-Line Distributor, $520 to improve 10 lives; Thompson Pump and WellPoint, $1,463, a 56 percent increase to improve 30 lives; Goldsboro Builders Supply, $6,648 to improve 132 lives; Barnes Braswell & Haithcock, $438 to improve nine lives; and Goldsboro Medical Clinic, $749 to improve 15 lives.
