Man hangs self
A 45-year-old man on Sunday hanged himself in a barn, according to a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report.
The victim was identified as Jerry Steven Lanier of 660 Overman Road. He was found at about 2:45 p.m. in a barn at his mother's home at 712 Overman Road.
Lanier had come to the home, left the door to his pickup open and gone in the barn, the report said. A while later, a relative went to the barn to see if Lanier wanted something and found him hanging from a rope.
Emergency medical technicians were summoned and pronounced Lanier dead.
Two teens shot
Two Goldsboro teen-agers were shot Saturday night at Edgerton and Argo streets, a Goldsboro police report said.
Dwayne Omar Mitchell, 16, of Atlantic Avenue and Quinton Leon Swinson, 16, of Fourth Street told police that they were standing at the corner at about 9:30 p.m. when they heard a vehicle speed off and then heard gunshots. Both realized that they had been shot.
Mitchell and Swinson were taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and released, a spokeswoman said. They could not describe their assailants.
Meanwhile, a woman resident reported that two teens on bikes on Sunday fired several gunshots into her home in the 1700 block of North William Street, police said. No one was injured.
Lila Jones told officers that damages to the siding, paneling and a window were estimated at $500.
Attempted holdup
A man pumping gas on Saturday on East Ash Street says several black men and a woman in another car displayed handguns and demanded that he pay $40 for drugs, a Goldsboro police report said.
Christopher L. Baker, 23, of Seven Springs said he told the robbers that he would have to go to his bank to get the money, the report said. Baker refused to let one suspect in his car and then drove into a subdivision, where he lost the suspects, police said.
One suspect was described as 5-feet-10 to 6-feet and 180 to 200 pounds, and he wore a red shirt, black pants, a black hat and a white do-rag. The other three black men and the black woman driver were not described.
Five hurt in wrecks
Five people were injured and damage was estimated at $12,800 in two recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Both drivers were injured and damages were estimated at $12,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 9:55 p.m. Friday at Dr. M.L. King Jr. Expressway South and South George Street, Goldsboro police said. Fletcher Walter Williams, 28, of Elizabeth Street, Mount Olive, and Ray Anthony Peterson, 51, of Ryan Way were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Williams was charged with driving while license revoked and a stoplight violation.
*Three people were injured in a two-car crash at 2:38 p.m. Friday at Lionel and East Mulberry streets, police said. One driver, James Everette Talton, 47, and his passenger, Brenda P. Talton, 46, both of Old Grantham Road, and the other driver, Gertrude Best, 73, of Langston Drive, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ms. Best was charged with a yield violation at a stop sign. Damages were estimated at $800.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A blue Yamaha gas scooter and a green Craftsman riding lawn mower were stolen between Tuesday and Saturday from the 300 block of Brentwood Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The thief had cut a chain in order to steal the mower. The resident, S.L. Brown, put a $4,200 value on the property.
*A collectible knife, tools and a 30-cup coffee pot were stolen between Tuesday and Sunday from a shed in the 100 block of Leslie Drive, deputies said. The knife, owned by Daniel Lee Bailey of Goldsboro, was valued at $1,000. The tools and coffee pot, valued at $400, were owned by the resident, M.I. Bailey.
*A video-game system and 40 games were stolen Friday after a window was smashed in a home in the 200 block of Jenny Drive, deputies said. One resident, Robert William Ivey, estimated the value of the stolen property at $1,900. Another resident, John Michael Ivey, set damage at $100.
Tractor stolen
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*An orange Kubota tractor with a front-end loader and a Kubota utility vehicle were stolen between Saturday and Sunday from Dillon Bell Implement Co. at 1401 U.S. 117 South, police said. The stolen property was valued at $27,300. The thief had cut the fence and pulled it back in order to steal the property. Damage was set at $200.
*DVDs, video-game equipment, boots and shoes, jeans and a book bag were stolen Saturday after a window air conditioner was removed at an apartment in the 900 block of Lincoln Drive, police said. The resident, Tijuana Wheeler, said the stolen property was worth $2,020.
