A center to help current and future teachers will be established at Wayne Community College due to a $10,000 grant from the Golden LEAF Foundation.
The grant, which comes from the state's settlement with tobacco companies, will be for the partnership between East Carolina University and community colleges in the area to provide teaching degrees away from the Greenville campus.
The resource center, to be housed in the college's library, will provide a variety of materials designed to promote classroom innovation, professional development and effective teaching. It will be available for use by students in the East Carolina University Wachovia Partnership East South Central Consortium, as well as local teachers.
From the grant, $4,000 is for scholarships for one high school student, two teacher assistants and two lateral-entry teachers who will pursue teaching degrees through the Partnership East program.
The program allows students from Duplin, Sampson, Lenoir, Johnston, Greene and Wayne counties to earn ECU bachelor's degrees in elementary education and special education.
Students complete their general education coursework at the community colleges and their junior and senior years at the partnership hub site at Wayne Community College or by Internet.
The ECU School of Education will start a second "cohort" of students studying special education in January. Applications must be returned by Oct. 15.
