County to buy hybrid cars

Two hearings and the purchase of electric-gas hybrid cars will highlight a light agenda Tuesday for the Wayne County Board of Commissioners.
The county board will take comments at 9:15 a.m. on a request to rezone an acre at 149 Old Mount Olive Highway from light industry to community shopping. The property owner has asked for the change to expand his oil-change and auto repair business.
The 9:30 a.m. hearing will concern a $12,147 grant received by the Sheriff's Office.
The board plans to spend around $100,000 for six electric-gas hybrid vehicles for the Environmental Health Department's use. Two companies have bid for the contract.
These will be the first hybrid vehicles purchased by the county. If they prove to be economical and dependable, County Manager Lee Smith plans to buy more for the fleet in future budgets.
The commissioners will consider asking the state Transportation Department to install a stoplight at the intersection of Wayne Memorial Drive and Saulston Road.
The commissioners will convene at 8 a.m. Tuesday for a briefing on the agenda. The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the commissioners' meeting room, third floor, Wayne County Courthouse Annex, 224 E. Walnut St.
