North Drive gets technology award

Dawn Potter, curriculum and technology facilitator at North Drive Elementary School, recently won new technology to help students learn.
Ms. Potter won the technology, valued at $5,400, through a drawing at the 2004 National Educational Computing Conference she attended in June.
"I'm thrilled to bring this incredible teaching solution to our school and the Wayne County school District," said Ms. Potter.
The system will be used in Shonise Jacobs' first-grade classroom. Last week, Ms. Jacobs and Ms. Potter received training, which was also included in the prize, from Susan Moll.
They learned to use the system, made by Promethean Inc.
The system includes an ACTIVboard, an interactive whiteboard for Macintosh and Windows PCs, and ACTIVstudio2 Professional Edition software.
With the software, teachers can use tools, such as rulers, protractors, dice and graphics to design high-quality displays.
The laptop computer, projector and whiteboard were designed exclusively for education.
The system allows teachers to use a clicker pen to move objects projected from the laptop onto the whiteboard.
Teachers also can type directly onto the whiteboard, making the learning experience interactive for students.
Students are engaged through the ACTIVvote response system, a radio frequency student handheld sphere that provides teachers with instant feedback during instruction. The increased interaction is one reason Ms. Jacobs is eager to use the ACTIVboard system.
"With this, kids get to have hands-on experience beyond PowerPoint," she said.
