Bunch wins Emmy
He did it! Goldsboro native Velton Ray Bunch has won an Emmy Award.
He won for Music Composition for a Series (Dramatic Underscore) for "Star Trek Enterprise: Similitude."
The presentation took place Sunday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles during the creative arts Emmy program, which precedes next Sunday's main ceremony. The program will be broadcast on Saturday from 8 until 10 p.m. on Entertainment Television.
The creative arts awards recognized technical and other achievements for the 2003-04 season.
This was the sixth time Bunch had been nominated for an Emmy and his first win.
Hall of Fame
The Duplin County Hall of Fame is accepting applications for nominees.
The Hall of Fame banquet will be held Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Country Squire Restaurant near Kenansville.
The Hall of Fame inducts outstanding citizens from the present and past.
The deadline to submit a completed nomination form is Sept. 25. To receive an application, call Anne Houston, the Hall of Fame president, at 910-296-0756.
Jones sponsors bill
U.S. Rep. Walter Jones is co-sponsoring legislation designed to help severely wounded troops from Iraq and Afghanistan have a smoother transition to civilian life.
The bill would give the secretary of defense the authority to transfer money to the Disabled Soldier Support System to help soldiers and their families resolve pay, benefits, entitlement and care issues immediately. It also expands the assistance to all wounded soldiers, Marines, sailors, airmen, coast guardsmen, national guardsmen and reservists.
"The men and women of our armed services bravely put their lives on the line day in and day out to defend our freedom. They are the true heroes in our society," said Jones, whose district includes Wayne County.
