Bank robber sentenced
A 53-year-old man from Goldsboro has been sentenced to more than 15 years in federal prison after being convicted of robbing a Goldsboro bank last year.
Matthew Smith of New Hope Road was arrested by Goldsboro police Dec. 30, one day after robbing the First Citizens Bank at 1900 N. Berkeley Blvd.
Police Investigator M.K. Horstmann said the only disguise that Smith wore was sunglasses. The day after the robbery, the robber's picture, taken from a surveillance video camera, appeared in the News-Argus. Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers received numerous anonymous tips on the identity of the suspect. Smith was picked up later that day.
Smith was sentenced last week in federal district court to 188 months.
Business owner
sees break-in
An alert business owner saw three men breaking into his mobile home dealership and stealing property Sunday. He notified police who arrested the suspects at Quality Homes of Goldsboro at 4043 McLain St.
The owner, Michael Daly, was on his way home from church when he saw an unknown vehicle in the parking lot. When he stopped, he told police that he saw three men loading furniture into two pickup trucks. Officer P.M. Carcirieri responded and arrested the three suspects.
Eleazar Paez Ortega, 23, and Saul Rosales Burciaga, 29, both of Pork Chop Farm Lane, Kenansville, and Pedro Mario Loredo, 23, of Kelly Road, Mount Olive, were charged with two felony counts each of breaking and entering and larceny. The men were placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of $12,000 secured bonds. Loredo was identified as a former employee.
A coffee table, two end tables and two lamps had been stolen after a door had been damaged, police said. The stolen property was valued at $1,400. Damage was set at $500.
Shoplifting
Two women from Wilson were arrested Sunday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony larceny from Belk's at Berkeley Mall.
Chavonne Pippiens, 24, and Lakeisha Speight, 21, were accused of stealing blue jeans and other clothing with a total value of $615. The clothing was recovered. The women were placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of $3,000 secured bonds.
Traffic accidents
Three people were injured in two weekend traffic collisions in Goldsboro, police reported.
*Two people were injured in a two-car collision at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at North Berkeley Boulevard and Langston Drive, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Aaron Chadwick, 43, of Deep Run, and a passenger in the other car, Frederick Antonio Toler, 19, of First Street, Princeton, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. Toler's driver, Letitia Dawn Glover, 29, of Jump Road, Princeton, was charged with failure to reduce speed and an opened container violation after the rear-end collision. Damages were set at $1,200.
*A passenger from Goldsboro was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 3 p.m. Saturday at New Hope and Patetown roads, police said. Linwood Earl Jones, 44, of D&W Circle, left the hospital without being treated, a spokeswoman said. He was riding with Howard William Davis, 53, of Limestone, Tenn. The other motorist, Eric Lee Langston, 17, of North Cottonwood Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. Damages were put at $1,000.
Thefts
Wayne County sheriff's deputies are investigating these reports:
*A .40 caliber handgun, a paint-ball gun, video-game equipment, a cell phone, two movie videos and a DVD movie were stolen from a home in the 2700 block of Indian Springs Road. The resident, Jimmie Ray Holmes Jr., put a $1,380 value on his property.
*A radio and compact disc player combination was stolen Saturday after a car was damaged in the 100 block of Burke Street near Dudley. The owner and resident, B.J. Anderson, estimated the value of the property at $100 and damage at $800.
*A red Honda dirt bike was stolen from the 2700 block of Zion Church Road. The owner and resident, Luther Allen Porter, said the bike was worth $6,500.
*A thief entered an unlocked home Sunday in the 100 block of Harmony Circle, found a key for the resident's car and stole the auto. The resident, Luis Miguel Ortiz, said the white, four-door 1997 Nissan Altima was valued at $3,000.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Video-game equipment and food were stolen Sunday from an apartment in the 900 block of Carver Drive. The thief had thrown a brick through a window to get inside. Neither the value of the property stolen from the Marquis Miller home, nor the damage amount was available.
*About $420 was stolen Friday after a truck window was smashed in the 1400 block of East Mulberry Street. No damage estimate was listed on the truck, owned by Mark Paul Ryan of Goldsboro.
*A brown 1993 Nissan Maxima was stolen between Wednesday and Friday from Quick Lube and Brakes at 402 N. Berkeley Blvd. The owner, Ashvini Mogali of Goldsboro, said the car was worth $3,000.
*Six gunshots struck a home in the 1900 block of Victor Place before dawn today. No one was injured. The resident, S.T. Exum, estimated damages to a window, two doors and a hall at $1,200.
Smoky house
A woman was cooking eggs Sunday morning to make chicken salad, forgot about them and went to church. When she returned the eggs were more than well done and her home at 607 Fedelon Trail was filled with smoke.
Fifteen Goldsboro firefighters responded quickly to the 12:22 p.m. call to Ruby Griffin's home with four trucks before there was any damage, officials said.
