Next weekend's Litter Sweep participants will get to enjoy a bountiful barbecue after working up an appetite picking up trash.

Carolyn Westbrook, with the state's Division of Highways, said that Wilber's Restaurant is donating a "pig and a half" for the lunchtime meal that will be served at Herman Park.

Slaw, cornbread, drinks and desserts will also be served at the barbecue. Coca-Cola is donating the drinks and Ryan's will spoon out delicious punch bowl cake.

Ms. Westbrook said that if the weather was bad, the event would be held the following weekend, on Sept. 25.

Helping pick up trash on Saturday will get you more than a good lunch though, it could put a little cash in your pocket.

Volunteers participating in the fall Litter Sweep will have an opportunity to receive cash for trash by finding plastic bottles with coupons attached to them.

The event, sponsored by Keep Wayne County Beautiful, the state Department of Transportation, Wayne County and the city of Goldsboro will begin at 8 a.m.

The coupons, worth $10 or $20, can be redeemed for cash during the cook-out lunch at Herman Park, when the other prizes are distributed.

The lunch will begin at 11:30, giving volunteers a little more than three hours to work up an appetite.

Corporations, businesses, county and city officials, civic groups, churches, youth groups and individuals are being asked to set aside time on their calendar and make plans to participate.

"While there are parts of Wayne County roadsides not littered, others are in dire need of attention. If there is a littered area that's been bugging you all year, please join us and help do something about it," said Simonne Cato, executive director of Keep Wayne County Beautiful.
