Crime of the Week
An armed robbery on Sept. 1 has been chosen by Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers as its latest "Crime of the Week."
A black woman and a black man, both wearing military-style camouflage clothing, entered the Commercial Check Cashing store at 206 S. Berkeley Blvd. at about 8:50 a.m., displayed a handgun, demanded money, took it and fled. The woman was described as 5-feet-5 and heavy-set. The man was not described.
Anyone with information on this armed robbery or any other crime in Wayne County was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000, if their information leads to arrests in felony cases.
Collisions
Thirteen people were injured and damages were estimated at $58,900 in eight recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*Four people were injured and damages were estimated at $8,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 9:36 p.m. Tuesday on Dr. M.L. King Expressway near Florida Street, Goldsboro police said. One driver, Ashley Olivia Parker, 17, of Willow Road, Dudley, and a passenger in the other vehicle, Marta Hernandez, 28, of Selma, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Two other passengers, Arnold Maldonado, 38, and Raymond Rivera, 22, both of Selma, left the hospital against medical advice, a spokeswoman said. Ms. Parker was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other motorist was listed as Rafael Dario Rodriguez, 56, of Selma.
*A passenger was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 11:24 a.m. Tuesday on East Lockhaven Drive near Wayne Memorial Drive, police said. Hazel Watson, 69, of Miller Avenue was released after emergency-room treatment. She was riding with Sharonda Renee Jackson, 20, of Miller Avenue. Robert Jarrell Malpass, 75, of Handley Acres Drive, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Damages were put at $900.
*A pickup truck was demolished at 12:25 p.m. Tuesday on Harrells Hill Road near Thunder Swamp Road, the Highway Patrol said. Kenneth Wade Holloman, 19, of Goshen Street, Faison, told troopers that he had swerved to avoid a cat. His pickup ran off the right side, careened back off the left side out of control and overturned. No charges were filed. The pickup was valued at $20,000.
*Two people were injured and a car was demolished at 10:35 p.m. Sunday on Church of God Road near Antioch Road, the Highway Patrol said. Terryl Marquin Reed, 20, of Biltmore Drive, and a passenger, Andy Bunn, 19, of Runnel Place, were released after emergency-room treatment. Reed was charged with reckless driving after the car ran off the left side, struck a tree and caught on fire. The car was valued at $9,000.
*Damages were estimated at $10,000 in a two-truck, hit-and-run collision at 10:50 a.m. Saturday on N.C. 55 near Camp Jubilee Road, the Highway Patrol said. A driver pulled from a driveway and collided with a westbound pickup driven by Dennis Edward Mendoza, 42, of Mansion Lane. The other driver fled. Troopers said the pickup was registered to Ismail Soto Diaz of N.C. 55 East, Seven Springs.
*Two people were injured at 2:50 p.m. Saturday on Talton Road near Princeton Road, the Highway Patrol said. Charna Williams, 34, of East Elm Street, and her passenger, Linda Bass, 39, of Airline Place, were released after emergency-room treatment. Gwendolyn D. Parks, 42, of Indian Springs Road, Seven Springs, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. Damages were set at $3,500.
*Four passengers were injured at 2:40 p.m. Saturday on Tommy's Road near Wayne Memorial Drive, although neither vehicle was damaged, the Highway Patrol said. James Williams, 7, Jeremiah Williams, 3, Jasmyne Williams, 1, and Shamequa Simpson, 12, all of Adler Lane were released after emergency-room treatment. They were riding with Wanda W. Williams, 36, of Adler Lane. The other driver, Tina Michelle Newsome, 24, of Echo Drive, LaGrange, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
*Damages were estimated at $7,500 at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on Perry Drive near Perkins Mill Road, the Highway Patrol said. The drivers were identified as Shawn Elton Abreau, 18, of Corner Lumber Yard Road and David Francis Chapin, 75, of Perry Drive. No charges were filed.
Investigations
Goldsboro police are investigating these reports:
*Jewelry, $300 in cash and sterling silver nickels and a wood jewelry box were stolen Tuesday from a home in the 3700 block of Central Heights Road. The resident, E.J. Smith, said the stolen property, valued at $2,025, included a watch, four rings and two bracelets.
*A pair of diamond earrings and a diamond bracelet were stolen Tuesday after a door was damaged at a home in the 1200 block of East Mulberry Street. The resident, K. Gunter, estimated the value of the property at $820 and damage at $550.
Correction
Carpet was damaged by the sprinkler system during a suspicious fire at the vacant Jeffreys Warehouse building at 701 S. John St. An article in Tuesday's public records said incorrectly that the damage was caused by firefighters putting out the fire.
