Wayne County commissioners did not discuss teacher supplements Tuesday as originally planned.

The county board had said in August that it would respond this week to the school board's latest stand on teacher pay, but the issue was not mentioned at the meeting.

Afterward, County Manager Lee Smith said that discussions are still continuing between the county administration and the school system. The commissioners could vote at their Sept. 21 meeting, he said.

The commissioners have been pushing since June for the school board to raise the supplement for certified, classroom teachers from 3.5 percent to 6 percent. The school board has said that it could only afford to raise the supplement to 5 percent, but it would extend the raise to all certified personnel.

The supplement is paid in two installments, the first being due in November.
