No deaths in Wayne County
No traffic deaths were reported over the three-day Labor Day holiday weekend in Wayne County. But Highway Patrol troopers and Goldsboro police were busy investigating collisions and holding seat-belt checkpoints as part of the statewide "Click It or Ticket" campaign.
The Highway Patrol reported 15 collisions and police responded to 12 over the period. Troopers had not completed some reports on accidents that involved minor injuries and significant property damage. Police had no crashes Sunday and Monday with personal injuries or significant damages.
Driver killed in wreck in Lenoir
LaGRANGE -- Although there were no traffic fatalities in Wayne County, a Kinston woman died Saturday in a wreck just outside of LaGrange in Lenoir County. Four others were injured.
Jolene Kalmanson, 23, of Kinston was killed when an Acura she was a passenger in was hit by a Ford Taurus at the intersection of Paul's Path Road and Brothers Road at about 9:30 p.m. The force of the collision split the Acura in half.
The Highway Patrol said Eric Ramos, 17, of Snow Hill drove the Taurus through a stop sign. He was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to stop at a stop sign and no driver's license. His bond at the Lenoir County Jail was $2,000.
The Acura was driven by Anthony Howard, 26, of LaGrange. He was taken to Lenoir Memorial Hospital.
Two passengers in the Taurus, 15-year-old Lydia Arquta and 18-year-old Jonathan Arquta, both of LaGrange, were taken to Lenoir hospital and then transported to Pitt Memorial.
The Highway Patrol said no alcohol was involved.
Toddler at Duke
A 3-year-old boy from Dudley, injured Thursday in a lawn mower accident, was listed today in serious condition at Duke Hospital in Durham, officials said.
Cameron Smith of Jill Court was rushed by ambulance to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was stabilized, and then airlifted to Duke.
Children charged
Several children have been arrested by Goldsboro police and charged with breaking into the vacant Jeffreys Warehouse building that was damaged in a suspicious fire.
The children, not identified because of their ages, had smashed a door and entered an adjoining warehouse at 701 S. John St., the police report said. They also smashed the windows of a car and tried to burn its interior.
Damages were estimated at $1,500 each to the car and art items and $100 to the door. Other items also were damaged, but the amount of damage was not immediately available.
The fire on Saturday had damaged a shelf on a back wall of the warehouse at 701-A S. John St. The carpet in the newly renovated section also was soaked by firefighters putting out the fire. Damage was set at $500 to the building and $4,000 to the carpet, officials said.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Four Kirby vacuum cleaners were stolen between Sunday and Monday from a work van on Donaldson Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The driver for Hill and Associates of Goldsboro, Elvis Ray Isler of Goldsboro, put a $7,272 value on the vacuums.
*A welding machine was stolen between Monday and dawn today from a work truck in the 100 block of Parks Drive, Pikeville, deputies said. The resident and driver for Southern Piping Co. of Wilson, David Dwight Thompson, said the machine was worth $3,000.
*Locks were cut on eight to 10 rental storage units at Adamsville Storage at 109 S. Berkeley Blvd., Goldsboro police said. It was not known if any items were stolen. The damage occurred between Aug. 20 and Friday.
Missing
A 14-year-old Goldsboro girl was reported missing Monday by relatives to Goldsboro police. Jamie Lakisha Grant of 1702 Courtyard Circle was described as black, 5-feet-7 and 135 pounds with brown hair, brown eyes and a light complexion.
When she was seen last at 1:50 p.m. Monday, she was wearing a white shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call police 705-6572.
