LaGRANGE -- The town of LaGrange will hold its annual Garden Spot Festival this weekend, which concludes Saturday night with fireworks.

Activities start Friday night with the Band of Oz performing at the Street Dance in front of the Community Park. The band plays beach music, as well as hits from the 1970s, '80s and '90s.

The band will play from 7 to 11 p.m. If it rains, the concert will be moved to the LaGrange Elementary School gym.

Then on Saturday, the festival will get started at 9:30 a.m. with an opening ceremony. Flags will be presented by the Boy Scouts, and the national anthem will be sung by William Hardy.

Vendors will sell food and beverages. Local churches and civic groups will sell sausage sandwiches, ice cream, baked goods, lemonade, barbecue chicken and pork. A petting zoo, games and other activities for kids will be available.

Heaven Sent Ministries, a gospel group based in Lenoir County, will perform at 10 a.m.

Performances by Dance Station and King Tiger Tae Kwon Do will precede the LaGrange Rotary Club's auction, which will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. The club will sell farm equipment, shrubbery, golf clubs, office machinery and items from the home to raise money for community projects.

After the auction, Carolina Clawz cheerleaders will perform. The Tenth Street Band will take center stage from 2 to 4 p.m.

There will be a break in the activities until 7 p.m. when the LaGrange Recreation and the Fire departments hold their annual charity softball game at the LaGrange Elementary School athletic field.

After the game, there will be a fireworks display. Spare Change will close the festival with music from today and yesterday at the elementary school field.

Garden Spot Festival T-shirts will be on sale before and during the event for $10 to $12, depending on the size. They can be bought in LaGrange at the Little Bank, Wachovia, Town Hall, Taylor/Spence Insurance and The Weekly Gazette newspaper offices.

The festival is sponsored by the LaGrange Chamber of Commerce, Little Bank, Fairway Outdoor Advertising, and the Kinston-Lenoir County Visitors Bureau.
