Reading course offered online

Wayne Community College is offering a new online continuing education course that will help parents and teachers prepare children to read and write.
"Ready, Set, Read!" uses anecdotes, examples and activities. It will start Sept. 15 and run for six weeks.
"Before children are ready for direct teaching in school, there is much we can do," said Kris Wilson, creator and instructor of this course. "Certain interactions with children during their earliest years create a firm foundation for later literacy success. Parents and teachers will know what to do with young children from birth until they enter school."
"Ready, Set, Read!" is one of hundreds of continuing education courses that can be taken entirely on line through Wayne Community College. Many are designed specifically for parents and teachers. Courses run for six weeks, and most cost $55.
Some of the other classes for parents and teachers are Caring for Children, Parenting: The First Five Years, Enhancing Language Development in Children, Understanding Adolescents, Solving Discipline Problems at Home, Guiding Kids on the Internet, Solving Classroom Discipline Problems, The Classroom Computer, Using Internet in the Classroom, PowerPoint in the Classroom, and Big Ideas in Little Books.

Students can register through the day the classes start. Through the end of this year, the start dates are Oct. 20, Nov. 10 and Dec. 8.
