WCC Foundation launches busy year

The Foundation of Wayne Community College has elected its officers for 2004-2005.
A.H. "Hank" Crawford Jr., a certified public accountant with Pittard, Perry and Crone Inc. will serve as chairman.
C. Monroe "Jack" Best Jr., owner of Best Commercial Development and retired president of Best Distributing Co., will be this year's vicecchairman, with Glen Chitty, a market executive for RBC Centura Bank, chosen as treasurer.
They take over the leadership roles at a time when the college has more students than ever before seeking scholarships. The foundation awarded 324 scholarships worth nearly $165,000 during the last academic year.
This semester, 143 scholarships worth more than $76,000 were awarded. The foundation anticipates as much demand for tuition assistance for spring semester.
The foundation board hopes to top last year's community fund drive and set a goal of $300,000 for this year's drive, which it will start Oct. 20.
It will also strive to make its golf tournament more successful, exceeding the $50,000 proceeds from this year's tournament. The 2005 tournament is set for June 14 and 15 at Lane Tree Golf Course.
The foundation also has more activities planned for the coming year than ever before, including classes on Homer's "Iliad" and Dante's "Inferno"; a Civil War tour of Richmond and Petersburg, Va.; a trip to see the "Matisse, Picasso and the School of Paris" exhibit at the N.C. Museum of Art; plays including "Julius Caesar," "The World of Carl Sandburg;" and "Spoon River Anthology"; and a gala event spotlighting Honorary Hollywood Mayor Johnny Grant and film and television star Anne Jeffreys.
