Wayne men and women in the military

Malcolm Wooten

Air Force Airman 1st Class Malcolm T. Wooten has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization, and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

In addition, Wooten earned credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

A 2003 graduate of Eastern Wayne High School, he is the son of Carolyn Wooten of Goldsboro and the grandson of Thelma Wilkes of LaGrange.

Malcolm Harper

Air Force Airman Malcolm M. Harper has arrived for duty at Minot Air Force Base, N.D.

Harper, an inventory management apprentice, is assigned to the 5th Logistics Readiness Squadron.

He is the son of Charles F. Harper of LaGrange and is a 2003 graduate of North Lenoir High School.

Wendell Slater

Army National Guard Spec. Wendell P. Slater has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky.

During the nine-week training, the trainee received instruction in drill and ceremony, weapons, rifle marksmanship and bayonet training, chemical warfare, field training and tactical exercises, armed and unarmed combat, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, traditions, and core values.

He is the son of Madaline Slater of Goldsboro.

Slater received a bachelor's degree in 2000 from the State University of New York Empire State College, Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

William Parrish

William C. Parrish has entered basic cadet training at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy. The six-week, two-phased orientation program trains men and women to meet the mental and physical challenges of a cadet.

He is the son of Lorrie and stepson of James Penry of Cary. His father and stepmother are Andrew and Beth Parrish of Goldsboro.

Parrish is a 2004 graduate of Green Hope High School, Cary.

Steven Brown

Air Force Airman Steven C. Brown has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

A 2004 graduate of Charles B. Aycock High School, the airman also earned credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Brown is the son of Mary Brathwaite of Goldsboro.

Robert Mitchell

Robert C. Mitchell has entered basic cadet training at the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., in preparation to enter the first academic year at the academy.

Mitchell is the son of Robert and April Mitchell of Kenansville and is a 2004 graduate of James Kenan High School.

Marion Carter

Marion M. Carter has completed the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) field training encampment at Tyndall Air Force Base, Panama City, Fla.

The summer curriculum is designed to motivate, educate, and evaluate a cadet's leadership potential to be an Air Force officer.

Carter earned awards for physical fitness and expert marksmanship at the camp

Upon graduating from East Carolina University and successful completion of the ROTC program, Carter will be commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

He is the son of Marion Carter of Goldsboro and is a 2002 graduate of Eastern Wayne High School.

Leslie Weidner

Air Force Airman 1st Class Leslie A. Weidner has arrived for duty at Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Wash.

Weidner is a structural apprentice with the 92nd Civil Engineer Squadron.

He is the son of Larry E. Weidner and Cathy M. Lewis, both of Goldsboro, and is a 1998 graduate of Eastern Wayne High School.
