SEVEN SPRINGS -- The mayor can't quit.

The Seven Springs town board voted unanimously this morning in a special called meeting to offer Mayor Jewel Kilpatrick a leave of absence until the end of the year.

Town Commissioner Lib Quinn was to deliver the offer this afternoon.

If she accepts the offer, the mayor pro tem, Emma Ward, is to fill in for her.

"I will as long as I can," said Ms. Ward. "But I can't guarantee. ... The meetings are the easy part of the job. The other things are the real job. ... This will involve the Christmas parade, putting up all the lanterns. It will be a lot of work."

The mayor is responsible for the park, the vacant lots, finding a way to pay for restoring the Baptist Church where the board wants to move Town Hall.

Town Clerk Deanna Grady said Ms. Kilpatrick told her she would come back and finish her term in office if the leave of absence was until the end of the year. The town board had offered her a two-month leave, which she declined.
