Rail work to continue
A second day of trimming of small trees, bushes and shrubs on the railroad right of way along Royall Avenue was postponed from today until next week, a Goldsboro police official said.
A portion of Royall Avenue was blocked Wednesday between North William Street and North Spence Avenue during the trimming by Norfolk Southern Railway.
Police Maj. M.D. Hopper said the city had wanted to keep one lane open but then blocked the entire street because the machine was "slinging rocks and debris and we did not want passing cars and windshields to be damaged." The machine cut trees about four inches thick, he said.
Hopper said the trimming will resume Wednesday.
Small claims limit
The maximum amount that can be sued for in Small Claims Court will be raised to $5,000 on Oct. 1, officials in the Wayne County Clerk of Courts Office said. The current maximum amount is $4,000.
Kerry committee
The Rev. William Barber of Goldsboro has been named as one of the members of the state steering committee for John Kerry.
The Kerry-Edwards steering committee is led by four co-chairmen: former Gov. Jim Hunt, former Charlotte Mayor Harvey Gantt, state Democratic Chairman Barbara Allen and Ed Turlington, former Edwards for President general chairman. The committee is composed of political, business, community and religious leaders from the mountains to the coast.

Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Donors will receive a free Red Cross T-shirt.
