Kerry shipmate to speak

Del Sandusky, a former Navy shipmate of U.S. Sen. John Kerry, will speak Saturday in Goldsboro.

Sandusky was Kerry's second in command in Vietnam and is one of his supporters in his run for president.

He will speak at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Wilber's Barbecue, U.S. 70. The public is invited to hear more about the presidential candidate.

Service fees go up

The fee charged by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office for serving civil papers and criminal summonses will go up Sept. 1 from $5 to $15, officials in the Clerk of Courts Office said.

The increase will be the first in about 12 years when the cost rose $1. Other counties charge significantly more, officials said.

The fees are charged for small claims court cases, child support matters, foreclosures and summonses for court cases, including worthless checks. Only one $15 fee will be charged for any number of worthless check charges, Sheriff's Capt. Buddy King said.

Safety Saturday

Four volunteer fire departments -- Thoroughfare, Dudley, Arrington and Mar Mac -- will conduct a "Safety Saturday" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Neuse River Shopping Center on U.S. 117 South.

Child safety seats will be inspected, a bike rodeo held, fire safety tips offered and a fire safety video shown, officials said. Fire extinguishers and smoke detectors also will be given away, officials said.

The program was postponed from the spring because of rain.

Wall of Fame nominees

The Wayne County Museum is planning to add one or two new people to the Wall of Fame.

Nominations should be received by Sept. 30. A ceremony will be held in January for the new inductees. Send nominations to: Wall Nominations, Wayne County Museum, 116 N. William St., Goldsboro, N.C. 27530. For more information, call the museum at 734-5023.

The children's hospitals supported by the Shrine treat such ailments in children as scoliosis, neuromuscular disorders, hand and back problems, leg-length discrepancies, congenital hip problems, rickets and orthopedic problems associated with cerebral palsy.
