8-year-old hit by car in Calypso

CALYPSO -- A child was hit by a car and seriously injured Monday afternoon on Trade Street.
Benjamin Parks Story, 8, of Trade Street, was crossing the street to see a friend and did not see the oncoming car, which was moving slowly, according to a relative. The impact lifted Benjamin about 10 feet in the air and pushed him backward. He suffered a head injury.
One of his grandmothers, Frances Parks, said he was resting quietly this morning at Pitt Memorial Hospital. "Keep those prayers coming," she said.
Benjamin underwent surgery Monday night, and this morning he was listed in critical condition.
His parents, Peggy Parks and Alan Story, were at the hospital this morning.
The call came in about 3 p.m. Monday. Duplin emergency medical technicians took him to Mount Olive Family Medicine Center. The doctor called an East Care helicopter, which takes patients to Pitt Memorial Hospital. The Calypso Fire Department set up a landing zone for the helicopter at a nearby school.
The Kenansville office of the state Highway Patrol is investigating, but no report was available this morning.
