Drug charges
Two men were arrested Thursday by the Goldsboro-Wayne County Drug Squad and an estimated $92,000 worth of cocaine was seized from their home near Dudley.
Jose Manuel Diaz, 26, and Eustorgio Arrellano, 27, both of Timothy Street, were charged with trafficking in more than 400 grams of cocaine, conspiracy to traffic in cocaine and maintaining a dwelling for the purpose of keeping and selling cocaine.
Diaz and Arrellano were placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of $1 million secured bonds.
Agents from the federal Drug Enforcement Administration in Raleigh assisted in the case.
Meanwhile, a 29-year-old Goldsboro man was arrested Thursday by Goldsboro police and charged with felony and misdemeanor drug violations. Mark Leslie Herring of Peachtree Street was charged with felony possession of cocaine and possession of marijuana. He was jailed in lieu of a $3,000 secured bond.
Fugitive found
A man wanted by Goldsboro police on charges stemming from a residential break-in was arrested Thursday, the same day that his photograph appeared in the News-Argus.
Paul Anthony Kornegay, 41, of North George Street was charged with breaking and entering and larceny from a home in the 700 block of East Mulberry Street. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $1,500 secured bond.
Police Investigator W.P. VanWijk was assisted by Cherry Hospital police in locating and arresting Kornegay.
House fire
Fire on Thursday destroyed an abandoned house near Antioch Road and Saulsberry Drive. The cause of the fire was undetermined, Saulston Fire Chief Henry LeBrecque said.
Saulston, Patetown and Faro answered the 5:30 p.m. call and put out the fire.
Assistant Emergency Services Coordinator Mel Powers also was summoned to investigate the fire. He could not be reached for comment.
A passerby saw the fire rekindle. Saulston and Patetown volunteers returned to put out the fire again.
Two hurt in wrecks
Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $28,800 in four recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*The driver and a passenger were charged and a second passenger was injured in a two-car collision at 4:45 p.m. Thursday on Westbrook Road near South Slocumb Street, Goldsboro police said. The driver, Jon M. Chamberlin, 18, of Wilmington, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. One of his passengers, also the car's owner, Brian Chessmore of North Platte, Neb., was charged with not having liability insurance. The other passenger, Willie Purvis, 25, of Wilmington, was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, Kathleen Mary Klinger, 26, of Outlaw Road, Dudley, had stopped for traffic at a railroad crossing. Damages were set at $1,800.
*A driver was charged with reckless driving at 7:35 a.m. Thursday after her car had run off the right side of Hooks Road twice, struck a ditch and overturned, the Highway Patrol said. Terece Misteline Brock, 22, of Blalock Road, Lucama, was not injured. But her 3-year-old car, valued at $12,000, was totaled.
*Damages were estimated at $9,500 in a two-vehicle crash at 5:05 p.m. Monday on Buck Swamp Road near Perkins Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Staley Worth Kirby, 36, of Edgebrook Drive, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other driver was listed as Mary Elizabeth Brathwaite, 46, of Cambridge Drive.
*A driver was injured and damages were put at $5,500 in a two-vehicle wreck at 5:59 a.m. Aug. 11 on N.C. 581 near Arrington Bridge Road, the Highway Patrol said. Sonia Renee Kenion, 30, of Stronach Avenue was released after emergency-room treatment. The other motorist, Alter Ortiz Baldemar, 20, of Camp Jubilee Road, was charged with driving left of center and no operator's license. The report said Baldemar's southbound vehicle crossed the center line out of control, Ms. Kenion swerved to the right to avoid the other auto but the vehicles collided.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*A pit bull and a mini-bike were stolen and a door was damaged Thursday in the 100 block of Boykin Drive, sheriff's deputies said. The pit bull, owned by Kenneth Bruce Crews, was valued at $250. The mini-bike, owned by Kenneth Crews Jr., was valued at $800. Damage was set at $50.
*A boom box, a video cassette recorder and $25 were stolen Thursday after a door glass was smashed at an apartment in the 1200 block of North Berkeley Boulevard, Goldsboro police said. The resident, Joan Boyette, estimated the value of the property at $130 and damage at $50.
*A grill was stolen between Wednesday night and Thursday after a door was damaged in a home in the 800 block of North John Street, police said. The resident, James Lee Dixon, put a $25 value on the grill and set damage at $10.
Information sought
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is seeking information on the theft of a dog on Aug. 13 from the 1700 block of N.C. 111 North. The suspect was described only as a white man who drove a truck with "Tel-City" on the side.
