NEA president to visit
The president of the National Education Association, Reg Weaver, will speak at the Wayne County chapter's fall membership campaign next month.
Weaver is scheduled to attend festivities at Tommy's Road Elementary School on Sept. 9.
Sponsored by the Wayne County Association of Educators, the evening will begin with a membership information fair at 5:30 p.m. The evening is an opportunity to gather information on the organization.
The N.C. Association of Educators' president, Eddie Davis, will provide legislative updates.
The mayors of Goldsboro and Kinston are also scheduled to present keys to their cities to Weaver in appreciation of his visit.
Weaver was chosen president of the 2.7 million member group in 2002.
Center Street Jam
The Band of Oz, which has been entertaining in the Carolinas since the 1960s, will perform Thursday at the Center Street Jam.
The jam is held at the Waynesborough House parking lot on South Center Street in Goldsboro from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The final jam will be Sept. 2 featuring Mardi Gras as the entertainment.
Bring your kids, lawn chairs and your dancing feet. Food and beverages will also be for sale.
Coca-Cola donates all proceeds from the sale of drinks to the local Boys and Girls Club. Lemonade will be made and sold by the Wayne County Historical Association, and Downtown Goldsboro Development Corp. beer tips benefit the Family Y.
During intermission there will be a doughnut-dipping contest. Children can volunteer to dip as many doughnuts as they can within a specific amount of time and win a free doughnut-dipping party for 12.
Jones receives award
U.S. Rep. Walter Jones received the Lawmaker of the Month Award for July from the 60 Plus Association, a nonpartisan, national senior citizens organization.
Jones received the award based on his consistent "pro-senior voting record." His district includes Wayne County.
Jim Martin, association president, cited Jones' votes to repeal the "death tax" which hurts small businesses and family farms; repeal the earnings limit for seniors 65 to 69; support the work of the President's Commission to Strengthen Social Security; and to oppose taxes on Social Security benefits.
