City Council hearing set

The city of Goldsboro will hold a hearing Monday on whether it should pitch in $150,000 to encourage a company to buy the APV Baker plant.
The money would be contributed to the county's efforts to raise $300,000 to entice Turkington Industries to buy the plant, according to City Manager Richard Slozak.
Officials from the Economic Development Commission have said that the purchase could save 120 jobs. It is one of three companies vying to buy the APV Baker plant on Ash Street near the intersection with U.S. 117, according to the EDC.
Turkington, which is headquartered in Lancashire, England, is a privately owned supplier of mechanical bakery and brewing equipment. It designs, manufactures and installs custom-built machinery for various products including mixers, oven loaders, freezers and storage systems.
The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall.
Other items on the agenda include:
*A public hearing on a rezoning request from Piggly Wiggly to rezone the west side of North Herman Street between Walnut and Mulberry streets from residential to neighborhood business.
*A public hearing on a rezoning request from Robert Gene Boyette to rezone the south side of east Ash Street between Meadow Road and U.S. Highway 70 East from residential to general business.
