Volunteers recognized
Wayne County will recognize five of its top volunteers Tuesday at a reception at First Presbyterian Church. The awards ceremony will be held at 10 a.m.
It is being sponsored by the Wayne County Association of Volunteer Administrators. This is the 26th year of the program, which showcases North Carolina's most dedicated residents.
Wayne County's five outstanding volunteers will be recognized as North Carolina Outstanding Volunteers of the Year at a reception Oct. 18 in Wilmington.
Recycle phone books
What do you do with your outdated telephone books after the delivery of new ones?
Recycle them, says Keep Wayne County Beautiful.
Recycled telephone books are used to make insulation for houses, egg cartons, mulch for gardens and other paper products.
Keep Wayne County Beautiful is urging residents and businesses to drop off their outdated phone books at the Wayne Opportunity Center at 619 S. George St., between the hours of 8:30 and 3:30.

Change of command
Col. Michael Duvall took command of the 4th Operations Group at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base on Aug. 6.
He comes to Seymour Johnson from Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. Prior to that, he was an F-15E Strike Eagle instructor pilot at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.
He was stationed at Seymour Johnson from September 1986 to January 1989 and flew the F-4 Phantom II. He was part of the initial cadre of F-15E pilots at Seymour Johnson when the base started flying the Strike Eagle.
He took command of the 4th Operations Group from Col. Darryl Roberson, who leaves Seymour Johnson for an assignment at the Pentagon.
Seven churches
Habitat for Humanity has seven churches involved in its Disciple Build project rather than six, as was reported recently.
The seventh church is Pinewood Presbyterian. Habitat Director Beth Parrish says Pinewood Presbyterian Church was the second church to sign on to the project.

Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile on Monday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Neuse Correctional Institution. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash.
