Governor visit
Gov. Mike Easley was scheduled to make an announcement in Goldsboro today concerning a grant to Wayne County and Goldsboro.
He was scheduled to be at the Wayne County Courthouse today at 11:30 a.m.
The state's Advisory Commission on Military Affairs was also scheduled to meet in Goldsboro today at 1 at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
The commission has been discussing ways to ensure North Carolina's military installations are not hurt in the upcoming base-closure study to be conducted by the U.S. Department of Defense.
Leadership class
The deadline is approaching to apply for the 2004-05 class of Leadership Wayne County.
The program, sponsored by the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and the Wayne County Charitable Partnership Inc., is an in-depth study of the county, its history, industries, governments, schools, nonprofit agencies.
Participants will attend an opening retreat in September and then meet one day a month through May. They will also choose and take part in a class project.
The program is intend to help people develop leadership skills and learn ways to better the community through service. Participation is open to Wayne County residents who have leadership potential as well as those already in those positions.

Olympics needs help
Special Olympics Wayne County is having a fund-raiser Monday to support its budget, athletes and volunteers at McDonald's restaurant on Berkeley Boulevard from 5 to 8 p.m.
Some athletes, committee members and volunteers will also be on hand selling cookbooks, coupon books and tickets for prizes.
Lori Coates Thomas of Special Olympics Wayne County said the group needs the support of the community.
"Their budget is low at this time and they need the money to coordinate their local sport competitions, purchase T-shirts for the athletes and volunteers, buy needed equipment for the local games, and send Wayne County athletes to regional and state competitions," she said.
