A 25-year-old Goldsboro woman remains in critical condition after a house fire early Tuesday morning, and police are investigating.
Police said Cara Mason of 512 Third Street was transferred from Wayne Memorial Hospital to the burn center at Chapel Hill University Hospital, where she is being treated for second- and third-degree burns to over 70 percent of her body.
Firemen and EMS workers responded to the fire at 4:39 a.m. Tuesday.
Goldsboro police are investigating the fire.
Police Sgt. David Kelly said the cause and origin have not been determined but he classified the incident as one that was caused by a person.
"Somebody, whether it was an accident or intentional, set the fire," he said this morning.
"We were able to eliminate any part of the electrical system or act of God as the cause."
He said several samples were taken from the scene and sent to the State Bureau of Investigations for analysis.
In the meantime, family, friends and relatives of the victim are being interviewed by police.
