New telephone books will soon arrive in homes and businesses throughout Duplin County.
RH Donnelly will distribute for Sprint over 28,900 new directories during August. That means 28,900 old phone books will need tossing out, says Teresa Quinn, Duplin's coordinator for recycling and the Keep America Beautiful program.
"Here in Duplin County you can recycle those old phone books," she says. "And to make things interesting, Duplin County's Keep America Beautiful Committee is sponsoring a telephone book recycling contest."
The contest is open to Duplin's eight elementary schools. You can help students you know and the school near you win prizes by donating your old phone book to a classroom there. The top classroom collector at each school will receive $100.
Collected phone books will be baled and shipped to Sunoco to be made into paperboard boxes, "perhaps even the next cereal box you purchase," says Ms. Quinn, who can be reached at 289-3091.
