Princeton nabs 25
in U.S. 70 campaign
PRINCETON -- Princeton police issued 25 citations last week during a Johnston County crackdown on speeders and aggressive drivers on U.S. 70 and Interstates 95 and 40.
Police Sgt. William M. Seawell was assigned to work U.S. 70 at intervals between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. from July 26 to Friday. He charged 16 drivers with speeding, three each with seat-belt violations and driving while their license was revoked, two for a stoplight violation and one for not having an operator's license.
Seawell said two drivers were charged with speeding more than 75 mph in the 55 mph zone.
The Highway Patrol and the Johnston County Sheriff's Office assisted in the campaign in Princeton. During the countywide crackdown, more than 1,000 drivers were charged.
House fire
Unattended cooking was blamed Monday for a fire that caused about $2,000 in damages to a rental home at 2012 Hawthorne St., a Goldsboro fire official said.
When 13 firefighters answered the 5:45 p.m. alarm with three engines, a ladder truck and a command car, "the occupants had put some of the fire out," Assistant Fire Chief Ray Boyette said. "But flames were still showing in the stove hood and the wall."
Firefighters needed about an hour to put out the fire, investigate the cause and finish salvage work. No one was injured.
Damage was estimated at $1,600 to the home, occupied by Donna Butler, and $400 to the contents. The home, owned by Delmus Bridgers of Goldsboro, was valued at $60,000. Contents were valued at $7,000, Boyette said.
Driver injured
One driver was injured and damages were estimated at $15,300 in three recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured and damages were estimated at $5,000 in a two-vehicle collision at 9:49 a.m. Monday at East Ash Street and North Madison Avenue, Goldsboro police said. Ella S. Bryant, 63, of Nile Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital, a spokeswoman said. The other driver, Maria Lujano Martinez, 34, of N.C. 111 South, Seven Springs, was charged with a stoplight violation. Police said Ms. Martinez's northbound sport utility vehicle collided with Ms. Bryant's eastbound car.
*A pickup was demolished in a wreck at 1:36 p.m. Sunday on O'Berry Road near Club Knolls Road, the Highway Patrol said. The driver, Samuel Taylor Britt, 17, of Manley Grove Church Road, Mount Olive, was not charged nor injured after the pickup ran off the right side, struck an embankment and overturned. The truck was valued at $5,000.
*Damages were put at $5,300 in a three-vehicle crash at 3 p.m. Friday at U.S. 70 and Beston Road, the Highway Patrol said. One driver, Shawn Thomas Kennedy, 34, of Britt Road, Four Oaks, was charged with a yield violation. Troopers said Kennedy's northbound pickup collided with an eastbound car driven by Preston Lee Holmes, 28, of Kinston and another northbound car, operated by Elpidio Mata Vasquez, 24, of Dollard Town Road and stopped in the in median.
Investigations
Wayne County sheriff's deputies officers are investigating these reports:
*A blue and white Yamaha dirt bike and a black and white Honda dirt bike were stolen Monday from the 1500 block of Old Grantham Road, sheriff's deputies said. The resident, Robert James McKinzie, said the bikes, valued at $6,600, had been chained to a propane tank.
*A generator, a five-piece tool kit, a drill kit and a weed trimmer were stolen between Thursday and Monday from a garage in the 100 block of Brebati Drive, deputies said. The resident, Allen Keith Brock, said his property was worth $969.
*About $25 in coins and two speakers were stolen Monday after a window was smashed in a home in the 200 block of Fox Drive, deputies said. The resident, I.M. Richardson, estimated the value of the speakers at $30 and damage at $150.
Goldsboro police are investigating these matters:
*A stereo system, two DVD players, five DVD movies, 35 movie videos and three pairs of shoes were stolen between Sunday and Monday from an apartment in the 1000 block of Lincoln Drive, police said. The thief had broken a window to get inside. The resident, Jennifer L. Stevens, estimated the property's value at $971 and damage at $100.
*A laptop computer, 25 video games and a video game system were stolen between Saturday and Monday from a home in the 700 block of Isler Street, police said. The resident, Janell Portier, put a $2,825 value on the property. No sign of forced entry was listed.
