PIKEVILLE -- The town board decided Monday to apply for a $40,000 grant from the North Carolina Rural Center to alleviate drainage problems.

The funding would be for planning, preliminary engineering and applying for a construction grant to deal with a large ditch that extends across town. The ditch has been filling up with stormwater.

Town Administrator Lonnie Graves said the town is planning to apply for a couple of other grants to help fix the problem, which could involve covering the ditch or designing a way for the water to flow better.

The ditch enters the Neuse River Basin.

The town would have to contribute 10.1 percent, or $4,500, of the total project cost to receive the entire $40,000.

Lonnie Graves, town administrator, is working with Hartigan Management Enterprises Inc. in Raleigh to prepare the construction-grant application, and the board will only have to pay the company for its services if it receives the grant.

If it does not receive it this time, it can apply again.

The application is due by Sept. 30.
