The Goldsboro City Council welcomed Don Chatman on Monday as its newest member. He becomes the third former city official to serve on the current council.

Chatman, the city's former planning director, said he hadn't planned to end his retirement so quickly, but said he was thankful for the opportunity to serve on the council. He retired in December after more than 30 years of service with the city.

City Councilman Chuck Allen joked with Chatman, saying he hoped he remembered how "cordial" Allen was to him when he was a planning director.

"I remember everything," Chatman replied dryly.

Councilman Charles Williams noted that there were now three former city department heads on the council.

They are Chatman, Councilman Jackie Warrick and Mayor Al King. Warrick is a former police chief for the city, and King was the city's personnel director.

King replied saying "that's a good thing" to have three department heads on the board.

Chatman thanked the board for appointing him and also thanked his family for their support.

"And to all those that called me and encouraged me to apply, I thank you," he said.
