Six athletes and 20 support staff were among 80 athletes from across the state who participated in the 2004 Special Olympic North Carolina equestrian games.

Jana Foote-Krug coached the Wayne County delegation that had athletes competing in three categories: Western Trails, English Equitation and Western Equitation.

Western Trails involves circumventing obstacles and English and Western Equitation deal with the actual controlling of movements upon command. The main difference between the types of equitation is the type of saddle used.

Wayne County athletes received several medals and ribbons.

Jennifer Stocks won gold in each of the events.

Robert Presson won silver in Western Trails and placed fourth in Western Equitation.

David McCroy won bronze in Western Trails and silver in Western Equitation.

Barbara Evans won silver in Western Trails and Western Equitation.

Lean Jones won bronze in Western Trails and fourth place in Western Equitation.

Heather Pardue took fourth place in Western Trails and won bronze in Western Equitation.

Four horses used by the athletes were provided by the Stepping Stone Stables of Goldsboro.

This is the third year the county has participated at the state level. Anyone interested in participating or volunteering with the program is asked to call 394-6269.
