A new member of the Goldsboro City Council will be sworn in at Monday's board meeting.
Don Chatman, former planning director for the city, will become the new council representative for District 3.
The seat became vacant in June when former Councilman William Goodman resigned. The council accepted applications through July 9, receiving eight applicants. That list was pared down to three applicants, Naomi Williams, Chatman and Cheryl Alston. The entire board interviewed the three candidates, choosing Chatman for his experience in planning and with city projects.
In other matters the council will:
*Vote on a revised site plan for Sam's Club that would allow the addition of a gas station. The plan calls for an additional 224-square-foot structure to house one employee for the gas station. There will be a total of 12 fuel pumps. Only members of Sam's Club will be able to buy gas there.
*Vote on a request to rezone the north side of S. Harding Drive between New Hope Road and North Park Drive from residential to office and institutional. The applicants, Larry and Linda Lean, wish to establish a new Montessori School at the location. The planning board has recommended not approving the rezoning.
*Vote on whether to allow a special use permit allowing more video games and pool tables at a game room establishment on Slocumb Street. The planning commission recommended denying the permit because it felt that the additional games would constitute a pool hall which would not be suitable for children between the ages of 4 and 15. The commission also felt that it would be dangerous for children to cross Slocumb Street because of increased traffic. The truck traffic has increased because the vehicles are now being routed to the back gate of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
*Vote on whether to add a "noise overlay" amendment to the zoning code. The amendment would restrict some development of land surrounding the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. The commission recommends deferring a decision on the amendment to allow more time to study the matter.
