Candidates for the 2004-2005 Teacher of the Year have been announced by Wayne County public schools.

The list of top educators will be narrowed to three finalists, with the winner announced at the annual banquet, scheduled for Aug. 12.

Each of the school system's 31 schools nominates a candidate to compete. The teacher chosen as the county honoree will qualify to compete at the regional level.

From the group, one Twiford Worldview Travel Award winner is also selected for the elementary grades, one for the middle grades, and one for the high school level.

The travel award was established several years ago by the Goldsboro Rotary Club in memory of C.W. Twiford, a former Goldsboro High School principal. Recipients receive stipends to travel to locations of their choice. Individuals and businesses fund the grants through contributions.

"Each finalist in our teacher of the year program is an outstanding representative of the teaching profession," said Dr. Steve Taylor, superintendent.

"It will be very difficult to single one of them out as our teacher of the year. Every candidate is a dedicated professional who makes a difference in the lives of children on a daily basis."
