For WCC students, summer's nearly over

Students who plan to attend Wayne Community College this fall have three weeks to finish soaking up the sun or scramble to complete their paperwork. Classes start Aug. 16 and there are a number of deadlines to meet before then.
For new students, the first step is to enroll. They must fill out an application and have all transcripts sent to the college.
They must also complete placement testing. All of these steps should be completed a week before the student registers.
Admission applications can be completed online and the college's catalog and fall schedule are available at www.waynecc.edu.
New students can register from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Registration will also be held 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 12 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 13.
Civilian students also can take WCC courses at the Education Center on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. Those courses are taught on a condensed schedule so that two eight-week terms are offered during each regular semester.
Students wishing to take courses on the base have another set of forms and deadlines. Those students have to be approved by base security for admission to the base. They must complete a Security Clearance Form and return it to the college's admissions office, or they may download the form from the college's web site, www.waynecc.edu, and fax the completed form to the base visitor's center. Deadline for submission of that form is Monday, Aug. 2
"If students don't apply in time, they may not be cleared in time for classes," warned Dwight Mayo, the college's base programs coordinator. "No clearance means no classes, and base security will make no exceptions."
There is no cost for the background check and it is valid for a year. Students must, however, get new passes from base security every term.
Civilians register for the first fall term of base classes during the Aug. 12-13 registration period on the college's main campus in Goldsboro. First term fall classes start on the base Aug. 16 and run through Oct. 9. The second term is Oct. 18-Dec. 11.
For those who need financial assistance, more aid is available than ever before. Yvonne Goodman, associate vice president for student services, says that students who do not realize it may be eligible for aid, so she encourages all students to apply but to says they must do it now.
The college's financial aid office can advise students about the variety of options for paying for their education, including grants, scholarships, loans and work-study programs.
Forms are available in the college's financial aid office or can be completed online at www.fafsa.gov. The office cannot assist students with new applications July 26-30 but will help students who have already been notified about their qualification status with associated forms.
